Zakat

Purifying Wealth Empowering Lives

Through Zakat, we transform compassion into action supporting families in crisis, sustaining orphans, building communities, and restoring dignity.

What is Zakat?

A transformative act of worship.

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam—an obligatory form of charity that purifies wealth and redistributes resources to those most in need. By giving Zakat, Muslims support vulnerable families, uplift communities, and enable long-term sustainability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions answered.

How do I know my Zakat is distributed correctly?
  • Human Concern has been implementing Zakat projects for the last 40 years. We implement projects that are Zakat eligible and have the most impact on those in need. This includes income assistance, emergency and disaster relief, food aid and refugee support.
  • This is our commitment to you:
  • Zakat funds are marked separately in our system. We ensure that these funds do not mix with any other funds.
  • The beneficiaries of our Zakat projects are only those who qualify to be Zakat recipients.
  • All Zakat funds are only spent on people who fall within the Zakat recipient categories (see page 3 for the list).
  • We disburse unrestricted Zakat funds to the recipients within a timeframe of 1-3 months or earlier after receiving them.
  • We have a Zakat Compliance Committee that approves all our Zakat projects and guides us on Zakat related matters.

Yes, Zakat contributions can be tax-deductible in the US, but only if they meet specific Charitable Contribution Deductions IRS requirements for charitable contributions.

It is permissible to use Zakat to cover medical costs and treatment for those who cannot afford it. A person who is unable to cover their essential healthcare needs is considered poor or needy in this context.

Our calculator will assist you in calculating your Zakat to ensure you are fulfilling your obligation in an accurate manner.

Your Obligation is Our Obligation

At HC USA, we take great care to ensure that Zakat reaches those most in need, whether they are vulnerable individuals or entire communities affected by poverty or disaster. Our field teams work closely with local partners and community-based organizations to conduct needs assessments and identify recipients of the Zakat funds. This way, we maximize the impact of each contribution, ensuring that it goes directly into the hands of those who require it most.

The Third Pillar of Islam

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and is obligatory for every mature, sane, and free Muslim who has accumulated the minimum required amount of wealth (nisab). By giving part of their wealth as Zakat, Muslims perform a religious duty, cleanse their possessions, and contribute to the overall health of society by uplifting those in need of economic support and relief.

Zakat offers numerous social and economic benefits, such as:

  • Social Security: Provides a safety net for those in need.
  • Redistribution of Wealth: Ensures a more equitable distribution of resources.

Recipients of Zakat can use the funds to:

  • Pay off debts
  • Send children to school
  • Provide food and shelter for their families

Timing and Calculation

Zakat is payable once a year, with most Muslims choosing to pay during Ramadan due to the increased rewards and blessings associated with charity in this holy month.
